Op-Ed:Gay Marriage - Synopsis

The following is a letter that was published in the State Journal-Register (the local newspaper for Springfield, IL) and my reply to that letter, which was also published in the SJ-R. The topic is gay marriage.

My Letter

People have it all wrong. There is only one overriding travesty inherent in the gay marriage debate.

An attempt by the majority to oppress a small minority isn't new or even shocking. A prevailing thought that a new social institution is eroding at the base morals of a society has been around since there have been people to be offended by change.

The REAL disturbing issue behind gay marriage isn't, surprisingly, about letting gays have the same rights as straight people. It is the fact that in all this debate, very few people have stood up and said, "Does anyone else here think it's ridiculous to allow government to legislate love?" Leave marriage to the churches; don't become complacent to the fact that the government regulates one of the most important personal connections you'll ever have in your life.
