Op-Ed:Constitution - Synopsis

The following is a letter that was published in the State Journal-Register (the local newspaper for Springfield, IL) and my reply to that letter, which was also published in the SJ-R. The topic is the Constitution.

Her Letter

Danny Faulkner is right. The ACLU has just about destroyed our country.

They took all mention of God out of the schools and public places. Our contry was built on the Bible. Our Constitution is the best in the world.

Now the ACLU wants to defile it with these gay marriage laws. The Supreme Court needs an overhaul, or to have a good look at what it is are doing to our country and pray before they give a decision, like it's all right to burn the flag or trample it.

The Supreme Court and the ACLU took all mention of God and the Ten Commandments from public places. The Supreme Court should pass a law that the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer be recited at every public meeting.

My Reply

I noticed in a Tuesday letter to the editor, Agnes Ramey wrote "Our country was built on the Bible. Our Constitution is the best in the world."

The funny thing is, I had always thought our country was built on the Constitution. Giving Ms.Ramey the benefit of the doubt, I gave our Constitution another look over. The darndest thing: I couldn't find the words "God" or "Jesus", two rather central figures of the Bible. In fact, I couldn't find much of any reference to the Bible.

I DID happen to find the word "Lord" in the phrase "... in the Year of our Lord...," but if a date from a calendar is the best evidence one can provide as proof that our Constitution (and, consequently, our nation) was "built on the Bible," then I suggest Ms. Ramey keep looking for more.
